This session is designed to help participants develop skills and strategies for academic reading which feed into their academic and research writing.

The session uses the SQ3R reading method. SQ3R stands for survey – question – read – recite – review. This method is useful because it provides a purpose and focus so that participants read more actively and constantly question the text. It helps readers decide which information is most relevant to their needs and also aids better understanding and retention of that information.

Participants can then apply this reading method to multiple reading texts in order make comparisons across texts and build up a picture of the literature of their field.

Session outline/ plan

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • develop academic reading skills and strategies for academic writing
  • prepare a critical appraisal of an article or chapter
  • practise using the SQR3 reading method - survey – question – read – recite – review
  • be able to apply this reading method to multiple reading texts in order make comparisons across the literature of their field
